Talking with Children and Young People
about Death and Dying
A workbook
Mary Turner
Talking with Children and
Young People about Death and Dying is to be
welcomed by any adult trying to help a child who has been bereaved.
Take heed, though, of the
warning at the beginning. This workbook has been designed for adults to
read with children and young people, and it should not be handed over to a
young person to read alone. As well as excellent points to discuss
together, there are drawings to look at, pictures to colour, and spaces in
which the child can draw as well.
Although we may like to think
we live in a society where ‘everything’ is out in the open, the truth
is that many adults find it hard to talk to children about death. Too
often the myth continues that ‘the kids are okay’ and so they are not
helped with the pain of bereavement. This workbook gives them an
opportunity to air their concerns, and fears. Of course nothing can make
up for the loss, but there are ways to help children through a period
following a death, and this workbook will be an invaluable aid to anyone
caring for a child.
