Parents Talking
FFLAG, Family and Friends of
Lesbian and Gays in the UK, has produced this very helpful video for
parents who learn that their child is gay.
In the prologue the
distinguished actor Sir Ian McKellan speaks of his regret that by the time
he came out as a gay man it was too late to tell his mother and father. He
urges that anyone facing this dilemma should contact and talk with people
who are there to offer support and advice.
The main part of the video
consists of parents facing the camera and talking freely about their own
situation and the impact upon them when they were first told the news by a
son or daughter. Without exception they speak of their gratitude at being
able to discuss their experience with others in the fflag network who have
been down the same road before them, They tell of the relief at being able
to share worries about questions such as ‘Was it my fault?’ and to
discuss ways of answering friends who ask, ‘Is he or she still not
married?’
With one voice they speak of
their pride in their gay children. The sadness came from hearing from one
young woman who had not spoken to her family since ‘coming out’. The
loud and clear message from fflag is that you are not alone, get help, and
talk to other parents.
