Teaching young children with autistic
spectrum disorders to learn
Liz Hannah
Illustrated by Steve Lockett
This book published by he
National Autistic Society is a must for any parents or teachers involved
with a child who has an autistic spectrum disorder. This is the most
helpful book I have come across in a long long time, and I found it hard
to put down. How can I begin to tell you of the treasures you will find in
this book?
For the first time I found
practical guidelines on how to help a child learn to play, to build up a
relationship, strategies to encourage eye contact and much else - all
described and illustrated in a straightforward way. These suggestions will
help parents long before a child with an autistic spectrum disorder starts
nursery or school - and the games and songs look fun to do with your
child. Many of the ideas suggested only take up a few minutes and can be
used throughout the day as opportunities arise.
Parents, teachers or
grandparents who wants to know more about how to develop a child’s
interest in books, numbers, or social interaction skills, need look no
further. For playgroup leaders, teachers, therapists and senco’s there
are also suggestions about different strategies. And if a child has
difficulty with imagination and flexible thinking there are ideas which
will help.
I like the way the author
stresses throughout how important it is to be aware of the child’s
difficulties, the necessity of using teaching skills in small steps and to
have clear targets and to be creative when looking for solutions. In other
words, don’t expect miracles. Any parent learning from this book will
give a child a good start, and help to develop confidence. You will both
find working together rewarding. Don’t give up! Please buy this book.
