Birth and beyond ...
Pregnancy, birth, your baby and family -
the definitive guide
Dr Yehudi Gordon
Without a shadow of a doubt
this is the best book on baby care and parenting I have ever read. It
takes the reader from conception to nine-months after birth in the most
informative and extraordinary way.
Dr Yehudi Gordon - a
Consultant Obstetrician in London - wrote this book with the help of other
experts in their fields - midwives, medical professionals, complementary
therapists and parents - and the result is superb. Birth and Beyond
presents a holistic approach incorporating ideas from different
perspectives in a way which will appeal to most parents.
The prospectus from the
publishers claims that this book ‘combines cutting edge science with
traditional wisdom and hands on practical advice’ and it does, it really
does. In the space I have here I cannot begin to list of the different
gems of information covered in this encyclopaedia. Here are some of the
topics taken at random: baby’s physical, cognitive and emotional
development month-by-month; diet and exercise in pregnancy; a father’s
role during pregnancy, birth and afterwards; how to understand medical
notes; what is active birth? What is natural birth? Breast and
bottle-feeding. I could go on and on: the A-Z Health Guide alone goes from
Abdominal Pain to Xiphisternum, with everything in between!
Birth and
Beyond will support any parent on the roller-coaster ride of early
parenthood. Dr Gordon was instrumental in introducing water birth into the
UK in 1978. His Birth Unit is family centred in which fathers are invited
to attend the birth and stay with their wife and child during the
postnatal period. I can vouch for this: two of my grandchildren were
delivered in his unit, and when I went to visit I found my daughter-in-law
nursing her new daughter, and my son fast asleep beside her in a
double-bed.
At £17.99 you may think that
this book is not cheap - but any parent who buys this will soon think it
is worth its weight in gold - all 576 pages of it!
