The New Contented Little Baby Book

The secret to calm and confident parenting

Gina Ford

This is really a ‘nanny knows best’ book, and Gina Ford certainly knows her babies and uses her twenty years’ experience of living and working with hundreds of small babies and their families all over the world to help parents to have a ‘contented’ baby. In 1999 she gave up maternity nursing and now runs a highly successful consultancy service for parents.

Meanwhile in The New Contented Little Baby Book she passes on to the reader some of her secrets for success, particularly in the areas of serious sleeping and feeding problems. Her precepts are ‘preparation’, ‘putting your baby to sleep in a totally dark room’ and above all ‘routine’.

She frowns on demand feeding and believes it leads only to an exhausted mother and an unsettled and unhappy baby. Ford explains why, and offers as an alternative her recipes to get your baby to sleep, and to sleep later in the mornings. This alone will have parents reaching out to buy this book and no doubt the sales will equal her first bestselling book The Contented Little Baby Book.

It is some while since I had to struggle with a baby who was restless and crying, but I would have valued a sensible voice in the background telling me how to follow her unique care plan which is designed to fit in with a baby’s own natural feeding and sleeping needs.

She flags up another warning: babies need cuddles but should not be cuddled to sleep. I know plenty of parents who have fallen into that trap and this book will show you another way towards a less disturbed night. Babies raised ‘the Gina way’ learn to settle themselves to sleep - an essential skill for life.
