Help Yourself
Enjoy Your Teenagers
Jean Robb and Hilary Letts
Even the most laid-back parent
needs to look for a little help when the teenage years arrive. And so for
them this book is a very useful reference book, for you can dip in and out
to find help on whatever is causing you concern.
On the whole the book is for
parents who feel that dealing with teenage problems is either driving them
mad, or making them feel incompetent, but there is also a first-class list
of helpful addresses for teenagers themselves who are experiencing serious
difficulties.
Are there specific trigger
points in your household? Wondering where to draw the line? If so, look at
the troubleshooting guides in this excellent book, with its splendid lists
of do’s and don’ts on how to enjoy teenagers.
Keep in mind that you fought
some of these same battles when you were an adolescent, so try to remember
how you felt when you were up against ‘the parents’. Also - a gentle
reminder to mothers and fathers - what you are now experiencing with your
own children depends in part on your own history and the expectations you
had of yourself as a parent.
It can be hard to stand back
and see your child moving out into the big wide world, but that is what
you must do for them, so try to find some happiness and delight in
watching them grow up into confident adults.
Full marks for the ‘100
reminders for things you can do when you are feeling stuck.’ If I still
had teenagers living at home I would photocopy it and put in on my
bathroom mirror to read every day! Read, digest, and Enjoy your
Teenagers.
