My Brother is Different

Louise Gorrod

Illustrations by Beccy Carver

Although this little book was first published by the National Autistic Society in 1997, it is still as useful today as it ever was. Read it to any child - or children - who need help to understand the behaviour of someone who is autistic.

It is a simple book to teach them just why another child might spoil a game or scribble on someone else’s drawings. Each point is cleverly illustrated and then explained in this manner, ‘When we play rough and tumble, my brother sometimes gets so excited ... that he bites or hits me. This is because he can’t control how he feels.’ The drawings illustrate many of the scenarios which are likely to worry a child.

The book concludes by stating that, ‘My brother is autistic’ followed by a list of the ways he can be helped ... and the promise to try to understand and to love him ... always.
