| AUTISM
IN THE SCHOOL-AGED CHILD
by Carol Schmidt and Beth Heybyrne
This book is intended as a practical manual for parents, teachers
and learning support assistants of children on the autistic
spectrum. It is full of information and is presented in an
easy to read, easy to 'dip into' format. It begins to unpack
the complicated world of ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis)
and gives very practical strategies to be used at home at school and
in social situations. Each target is clearly broken down into
single, manageable steps. The illustrations and different
fonts keep the book alive and makes it easier to concentrate on
little chunks at a time. There is a lot to take in!
Carol Schmidt is the parent of a son with autism. She says
that she wrote this book together with a special educator to address
the common needs of the school-aged child in the classroom, which
were largely ignored by the public school system in the community.
The authors also wanted to offer strategies for problems which
parents struggle with at home
I would recommend this book to parents and and school settings
and although the authors are American it 'translates' well to the
UK.
