The Queer Parent's Primer
A lesbian and gay families' guide to
navigating the straight world
Stephanie
A Brill
This book will be welcomed by
all gay or lesbian families. No longer is being both gay and a parent
mutually exclusive, and any gay parent who is searching for guidelines
need look no further than The Queer Parent’s Primer.
This book looks unflinchingly
at all the difficulties a gay parent may come up against. Although gays
now have a higher profile in society, it does not mean that a gay parent
has an easier ride, and this book tries to address the most common
concerns.
I question the statement that
it is rare that the gay family is created by accident. I am thinking of
the men and women who contact me about the difficulties they are
experiencing on coming out after being a partner and parent in a
heterosexual family. What do they tell the children? How complicated is it
to settle with a new gay partner who already has children?
Nevertheless, if you are gay
or lesbian and a parent, there will be a lot of information for you in The
Queer Parent’s Primer. There is an exceptionally helpful section on
dealing with homophobia and helping your child to navigate the straight
world.
